New England Junior Fencing Camp

The New England Junior Fencing Camp is one of the nation's best and oldest fencing camps. Formerly the NA Section Camp, it is in its 25th year.  Set on the suburban campus of Brandeis University, the camp offers group instruction in all three weapons, individual lessons and bouting in a modern facility by experienced camp and junior coaches. 

FENCERS:  Campers must be between eleven and eighteen years of age, not have graduated high school, and have some fencing experience. 

LOCATION:  Brandeis University, in Waltham, Ma., is fifteen miles west of Boston, about twenty-five minutes from Logan airport, near the junction of I 95      and I 90. For directions go to www. Brandeis.edu. 

DATES: The camp runs Saturday afternoon June 23 to Thursday afternoon June 28. Campers should report to the campus between 3:00 and 5:00pm on the 23rd. Pickup will be between 12:00 and 2:30 on the 28th. 

THE PROGRAM:  The camp day includes three sessions comprised of one individual lesson, footwork sessions, group blade work exercises, and electric bouting.  Talks on tactics, equipment repair and mental training are often included.  Campers enjoy a 6-1 fencer-coach ratio.   

COST:  The fee for the camp is $705.00, which includes all instruction, room, meals and camp shirt. A non-refundable registration fee of $200.00 is due by June 8.  The full fee is due by June 20.  For commuter fencers not staying or eating on campus, the fee is $420.00. 

FACILITIES:  Campers have use of the 130,000 sq. ft. Gosman fieldhouse and the fencing room, which has six grounded strips with overhead reels and extension lights.

Campers can also use the indoor pool, aerobic room and outdoor tennis courts at the Gosman Center.

LIVING AND RECREATION: Campers will stay in Brandeis dormitories, eat at Sherman Cafeteria and have access to campus game rooms, student store, entertainment, etc.   

Campers will be supervised by one full time adult on site and college counselors as well as staff coaches. Campers must comply with camp and University rules. 

PLEASE BRING: Campers will need full fencing equipment to USFA regulations, including a minimum of two electric weapons, two body cords and full uniform.  Also needed are many tee shirts, socks and shorts.  Sheets, pillows and towels are not provided by the camp.  Optional items include: fan, radio, tool box, bathing suit, alarm clock, tennis racket. 

MEDICAL AND LIABILITY:  Campers must have proof of a recent medical examination allowing sports participation.  All campers’ parents or guardians  must sign the liability form and provide health insurance and contact information.  Medical and liability forms will be available online or sent to all campers. A nationally certified athletic trainer is on duty during training sessions.

The camp may be limited to approximately the first sixty fencers to apply and send a deposit.

THE 2007 STAFF (tentative at this time):  Staff coordinator is Bill Shipman, head men and women’s coach at Brandeis University and coach at Boston Fencing Club. A fencing Master, he was 1994 NCAA Coach of the Year and has instructed at the USFA Coaches College. 

Dr. Ron Miller is long-time head coach at the University of North Carolina, the NC Development Program, and former staff director at the USFA Coaches College.  Also a fencing Master, Miller is considered one of the nation’s best college fencing teachers.

Al Peters is former head coach at Cornell University and has coached at Princeton and Rice Universities.  He is a former National team member. 

Jim Murray, a fencing Master, coaches at Johns Hopkins University and was long-time coach at Haverford College and Salle Csiszar In Philadelphia.

Zoila Palacio  was associate head fencing coach at Temple University and teaches epee at the USFA Coaches College. 

Andy Goldman  coaches at Buckingham, Brown and Nichols school and has coached at Boston University, Boston Fencing Club and Concord-Carlisle High School.

Hank Powell coaches and teaches at the fencing powerhouse Hopkins School in New Haven, Ct.,
