Parent's Guide To Fencing Equipment
If they forget it, they'll still blame you...
This is a very short guide to fencing equipment for parents.
We assume that your child's coach has helped them purchase
equipment, so you should be familiar with everything below.
Think of this as a checklist for what should be in the
equipment bag before leaving for a competition.
The absolute minimum:
- Mask
- Underarm Protector (Plastron)
- Breast Protector - mandatory for girls
- Jacket
- Knickers
- Glove
- Long Socks - must reach bottom of your knickers
- Fencing Shoes or Sneakers
- Lamé - for foil and sabre
- at least two working weapons
- at least two working body cords - plus head cords for sabre
- Towel for face
- Exact change for competition entry fees
- Warmup jacket and pants
Things you should also have
- Plenty of water or sports drink
- Snacks (as appropriate for the length of the competition)
- Any medications your child might need (esp. inhalers)
- Dry clothing for after - shirt, socks
- Hair clips
- Tool kit - tiny screwdrivers for cords and tips, big screwdriver
and/or Allen wrench for tightening handles, pliers, spare parts, towel
for cleaning weapons.
Husky makes an excellent precision screwdriver kit you can pick up for around
$5 from Home Depot or Amazon.
Things you should also consider at school, local and regional events
At USFA events there is always medical help available.
- Instant Cold Pack
- Ace Bandage
- Band-aids
You can learn a lot about more about equipment and how
to repair it from the web.
